Berger Lahr RSM: Can motors and packaged synchronous motors
ASTRO is your point of contact for the replacement, new delivery and individual adaptation of BERGER LAHR synchronous motors, both for the canned motors of the RSM 36 to RSM 63 series and the packaged motors of the RSM 828 to RSM 884 series. Since 2017, we have been a partner of Schneider Electric Automation GmbH (formerly Schneider Electric Motion) with the Berger Lahr synchronous gear motor brand, and since October 2025, we have also been the exclusive partner for canned motors.
Thanks to close technical cooperation, ASTRO has in-depth knowledge of the design, properties and use of these motors. This expertise forms the basis for new deliveries and individual adaptation of compatible ASTRO ASM replacement motors. This ensures precision, reliability and durability at the highest level.
BERGER LAHR has manufactured two types of synchronous motors in the RSM range:
- canned motors (for small and medium power ranges)

Order new original BERGER LAHR can motors exclusively from ASTRO
ASTRO offers new original BERGER LAHR canned motors from the RSM 36 to RSM 63 series. Since October 2025, we have been the exclusive global partner of Schneider Electric Automation for BERGER LAHR canned motors.
From 2026, all orders for BERGER LAHR canned motors worldwide will be processed by ASTRO. As part of this partnership, all orders for BERGER LAHR RDM motors, housings and cams will also be accepted and processed by ASTRO.
We appreciate the trust placed in us and assure all customers a courteous handling of their requests, including those with individual requirements.
Outstanding features of BERGER LAHR synchronous motors
The most outstanding feature of the synchronous motor is its synchronous speed, which is independent of load. BERGER LAHR synchronous motors in both model series are also characterised by a high self-holding torque (even higher on request) and low inertia.
The synchronous motors are equipped with permanent magnet rotors and are therefore brushless and wear-free. Permanently lubricated rotor shaft bearings in the RSM 36 - RSM 63 series and ball-bearing rotor shaft bearings in the RSM 828 - RSM 884 series ensure reliable operation even in the most demanding applications. Years of experience in the design and manufacture of motors and in quality control have made it possible to offer a 24-month warranty on all motors.
Robust, precise and reliable drive components
Almost all motor types are manufactured in 50 Hz and 60 Hz versions (for 3-phase motors, 10–300 Hz is also possible). The constant operating speed makes the synchronous motor a frequently used drive in control technology, conveyor technology, medical technology, heating technology, precision engineering and other areas of equipment and machine construction.
BERGER LAHR synchronous motors are robust, precise and reliable drive components. The requirements for ‘compact, powerful, and cost-effective’ are met by BERGER LAHR synchronous motors through a wide range of types with various electrical designs.
Output powers in the range from 0.15 to 33 watts enable technical solutions ranging from purely time-based motion sequences to synchronous power drives with high torques.

Structure of synchronous motors
There are two fundamentally different designs of BERGER LAHR synchronous motors. On the one hand, there are canned motors – the housing parts are pressed together like a can and lid – and on the other hand, there are ‘packaged’ motors.
Can motors represent the lower and middle power range of BERGER LAHR synchronous motors; packaged motors are in the middle and upper power range.
Synchronous motors of the ‘can’ design consist of two or three individual stators arranged axially in a row. One winding is embedded in each individual stator as a ring coil. Depending on the motor type, iron claws form 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 pole pairs per stator in the motor interior. The rotors are made of barium ferrite permanent magnets. The motor shafts are made of hardened, polished steel. Permanently lubricated plain or ball bearings ensure smooth and wear-free operation.
‘Packaged’ motors get their name from their stator magnet material. Stamped electrical steel sheets are riveted together to form a stator package. Two windings are distributed axially across the eight poles of the stator. The rotors contain radially magnetised barium ferrite or ALNICO permanent magnets. The motor shafts are made of hardened, polished steel. Permanently lubricated ball bearings support the shaft ends.
